2 person Knife Drill

The Following Drill is from an interview with Grandmaster Rene A. Capangpangan
by: Ned R. Nepangue

This series of ten photos is designed to show the basic way that Baraw Sugbo trainees learn the movements. Note: that one practioner is armed with a knife {Baraw} while the other is unarmed.
The teaching is one - on - one, with the Master or Guro starting with the knife and attacking the defenser or student. Roles may then be reversed. In this process several things are apparent: The student learns to overcome fear of knife attacks, learns that grips and disarms do not always work, and sensitivity, while the knife wielder also learns how to retain his knife against disarms and the like.
Obviously, none of these sequences should be attempted without sufficient training under an expert and these photos are shown only for informational purposes, not actual methods of knife fighting or defense.

Gripping and grasping are very important as will be readily seen. this drill is done in a " standing position " or a " stationary position " withou much footwork. the body will have some movement and waist movement may be done. Both hands are utilized by both practitioners to nullify movements and to effect certain releases as seen when the entire sequence is practiced and repeated.

1. A fist blow is given to the wrist of the knife - weilder to affect nerve centers and make it easier to twist the wrist of the assailant

2. The attacker tries to swing or move his arm out of the grasp of the defender.

3. Defender goes with the movement and turns it into a reversal grip which the knife wielder neutalized by grasping.

5. The attacker then frees the knife hand from the defender, indicating a possible hand slash at the same time while preparing to strike the defenser with the blade.

6. The defender then begins the defense, which retunrs to the beginning.
